GOOD MONDAY EVERYONE

Good Monday all , I so can't believe it is the end of July already . I am about two thirds of the way through my summer reading list . Today we have a great thriller for you to read BLACK OUT by Marc Elsberg

                          BOOK BLURB

"Fast, tense, thrilling — and timely: this will happen one day. Highly recommended." —Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series
This is no accident.
This is no act of God.
This is Blackout.

A terrifyingly plausible million-copy selling debut disaster thriller.
When the lights go out one night, no one panics. Not yet. The lights always come back on soon, don't they? Surely it's a glitch, a storm, a malfunction. But something seems strange about this night. Across Europe, controllers watch in disbelief as electrical grids collapse. There is no power, anywhere.
A former hacker and activist, Piero investigates a possible cause of the disaster. The authorities don't believe him, and he soon becomes a prime suspect himself. With the United States now also at risk, Piero goes on the run with Lauren Shannon, a young American CNN reporter based in Paris, desperate to uncover who is behind the attacks. After all, the power doesn't just keep the lights on—it keeps us alive.

                       MY REVIEW

Well what a book to start with by this author, I mean we all have been through power outages but this one has an evil twist to it . When the lights go down everyone thinks that oh it will come back on . But as the electrical grids across Europe start to fall and no one knows what is going on . When a former hacker tries to figure it out he ends up becoming the lead suspect in the case . Piero must figure out what the heck is going on with the help of a young CNN reporter they must figure it all out before the world goes into anarchy .
This book has been out for awhile overseas but this is the first time it was translated into English for us thriller readers . When I started this book I was omg what am getting myself into. I felt like I was lost at the beginning . But by chapter three I got the gist of what was happening and then I got sucked into the story big time , it had me thinking wow this could really happen in this day and age . Anyone could hack into anywhere and wreak havoc on the unsuspecting people . It actually gave me chills as I was reading , and thoughts were running through my mind the whole time what would I do if it happened here .
The characters are well developed and you actually want to cheer for Piero and Lauren as they fight to figure out what is happening . Piero is trying his best to figure everything out and he being looked at as a suspect . He is a great anti hero . The place in Europe are their own characters all beautifully written with the undertones of chaos could ensue with each grid falling down .
The author takes us on an European adventure and doesn't leave anything out . The story shows how we as a world community depend on certain things and when those things are taken away and held at ransom by an group of people pushing their agendas . Power being one of those things that we are all connected with some way or other . How well are your ready to adapt when the worlds governments are way too slow to act . Those are just some of the questions you are left asking yourself .
Over all I really liked this book but I just found it a little overwhelming when I started reading and some areas just felt a little slow to me . But that honestly didn't distract me from getting sucked into the book and was on the edge of my seat most of the way through.  So if you like a great thriller check it out  YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED

HAPPY THURSDAY ALL

Good Thursday afternoon all, or as some of us call it Friday eve . Today we area going to review a great true crime book by one of my favourite authors . A CLOCK WORK MURDER . The Night a Twisted Fantasy Becomes a Demented Reality by Steve Jackson

                         BOOK BLURB

They thought about their evil fantasy for months. Then wound up like clockwork toys ... they acted.

In April 1997, pretty, 22-year-old Jacine Gielinski stopped her car at a red light in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She had no idea that the two young men looking at her from the car next to hers would in that moment decide she would be their target for unspeakable horrors.

George Woldt and Lucas Salmon were an unlikely pair of best friends, much less killers. Woldt was a fast-talking, well-dressed ladies’ man who boasted of his sexual conquests. Salmon was deeply religious, and socially misfit, obsessed with losing his virginity.

Woldt was the leader, Salmon his willing follower, but neither had been in serious trouble with the law. However, inspired by the cult movie, A Clockwork Orange, with its dystopian violence, they fantasized for months what it would be like to abduct, rape, torture and murder a woman. Then, aroused by watching ultra-violent pornography, they decided to act upon their evil thoughts.

Revised and updated with a new afterword from the author, A CLOCKWORK MURDER recounts the steps that led to an unthinkable crime and its impact on a community, as well as the friends and especially the parents of an innocent young woman who paid with her life for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

From The True Crime Library Of New York Times Bestselling Author Steve Jackson

                           MY REVIEW

This book absolutely blew me away, the author has such a way to write about the God awful crimes that go on in this world with a shocking realism that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time . Lets enter into the minds of George Woldt and Lucas Salmon two polar opposites but the best of friends . George the well dressed ladies man and Lucas the shy religious guy who is just following George around . Just hanging around watching the movie CLOCK WORK ORANGE and fantasizing how they could capture and rape a unsuspecting woman . That's what is was for a long time until the day that Jacine Gielinski drove by them . That's when they put their plan into place and what happens is so unspeakable and so horrific . It was hard to read what they did to her .
This story takes us on the rollercoaster ride of emotions . It shows us the unspeakable plans that were put in place by Woldt and Salmon and all the events up to their trial .  The legal proceeding alone will want to make you scream for justice . I strongly dislike defense attorneys . I know they are only doing their job but they like to drag things out in hopes that they will just drop the case. These two men are the epitome of evil . They do and use everything in their power to stall and upset the courts. To me Worldf is the ummm whats the word oh here organ grinder and Salmon is like his dancing monkey. Salmon knows its wrong but goes along with every Woldt says and does cause he doesn't want to upset Woldt . I wanted to stab them myself a few times . They just made me so angry.
My heart broke for Jacine's parents . The hell that they went through to see her killers come to justice was just heart breaking . They were harassed and pushed to the limits but they prevailed and saw the justice that was rightfully theirs .
Steve Jackson is one of the top writers of true crime . He brings the story alive and you are sucked in as soon as you start reading . You want to know how things went down and you want the criminals to be brought to justice .  He writes with such class and grace and when he is done you want to cheer for the victims and the lawyers that prosecute them .
This book had me crying and actually swearing a little . I wanted vengeance so badly . Yes I know its a book but it is a true story , I had chills running up my spine but I couldn't put the book down . So if you like true crime and want a good summer read to finish off the summer check out A CLOCKWORK MURDER  by Steve Jackson . You will not be disappointed

There’s plenty for the Detective Club to investigate—but Olive Silverlock is distracted by her new rebel roommate, Amy. Is Maps Mizoguchi right to be suspicious of a bad influence, or just jealous that she’s losing her best friend?

Plus, Detective Club is joined by the World’s Greatest Detective—Batman!

Collects GOTHAM ACADEMY: SECOND SEMESTER 1-3, 5-8.

                      MY REVIEW

This was the first book in the series that I have read .  I thought that diving into the second book in the series was going to leave me with a bunch of questions . It didn't though  I started reading and it was just like I knew what was going on . Its going to back to high school but with a big twist . Meet the super naturals and their prep school .
These are well written stories that actually have some parts of what happens in a real high school . We have the cliques the feeling of not belonging and there is an introduction to homosexuality through out the book . Well written I must say . You start to feel for the characters and actually fall for a few of them .
The characters are well written and you can't help but fall in love with a few of them like Pom and Olive .  Then there are other characters that you will not like and there are reasons behind them . I mean you can't love all the characters all the time . You always pick and choose the characters you love .
The graphics in the novel are great , the colour alone jump out at you when you start to read . The story lines were good the action never stops and the dialogue between characters is funny . Nothing is as it seems at Gotham Academy and the writers prove that on every page . This is a great addition to the rebirth universe and ties into the other stories . So if you are wanting a good comic for you and your kids this summer check it out . You will not be disappointed .

Good Thursday all

I hope that everyone is having a good day on the Friday eve. Hope you guys are getting your summer reading list down . Today we are going to review FIERCE KINGDOM by Gin Phillips.

                         BOOK BLURB

An electrifying literary thriller introduces an unforgettable mother and son, whose simple trip to the zoo one afternoon is transformed into three hours of terror and survival after gunshots ring out. What would you do to protect the ones you love?

After school on a late October day, Joan has taken her four-year-old son, Lincoln, to one of his favourite places on earth: the zoo. Just before closing time, as they need to go home, she hears some loud pops like firecrackers. Not thinking much of it, they head for the exit...until Joan realizes the eerie human emptiness means danger, then sees the figure of a lone gunman. Without another thought, she scoops up her son and runs back into the zoo. And for the next three hours--the entire scope of the novel--she does anything she can to keep Lincoln safe.
Both pulse-pounding and emotionally satisfying, Fierce Kingdom is a thrill ride, but also an exploration of the very nature of motherhood itself, from its saving graces to its savage power. At heart it asks how you draw the line between survival and the duty to protect one another? Who would you die for?

                         MY REVIEW

What would you do if you were trapped in a zoo with your child while there is armed men running around . This is the question Joan had to figure out with her son LIncoln one day in October.
I must say that I was intrigued when I started reading this book . I just had a little bit of a hard time at the beginning . I found that it just read a little slow and not much was happening .  As I read and got going into the book I was surprised how it picked up speed and the action took off . You kind of get sucked in and start worrying if they would get out and not get hurt . Will they be able to survive the ordeal . The book really came into its own towards the end of the book when Joan and Lincoln got to the others . They worked well together as a group. Then the ending just kind of went weird but it did kind of tie everything up
The characters grew stronger with each turn of the page . I liked Joan she was like a momma bear protecting her son . Lincoln was actually my all time favourite character  he was such a good kid and he loved super heroes . He did what his mom asked him with not much fuss. You never actually get to see the armed men you just hear the shots and the yelling .   They are phantoms while you read them .
Over all I did enjoy this book and the premise of the story is really good . I just had some issues with the lack of action at the beginning and never actually seeing the gun men .  This is the first book I have read by this author and actually I am looking forward to reading more of her work . So if you want a book that builds slowly and then take you to the edge of your seat . This is the book to add to your summer reading list
I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review

WELCOME TO WEDNESDAY

Good Afternoon all welcome to Wednesday . today we are going to review the second book in the Queen of Thieves series . THIEF OF THE NIGHT GUILD by one of my favourite authors Andy Peloquin.

                          BOOK BLURB

"I am Ilanna, Journeyman of House Hawk. I do the impossible."

A cunning thief of unrivaled ingenuity, Ilanna is determined to secure her freedom. Nothing will prevent her escape from the Night Guild's callous cruelty, not even the most powerful man in Praamis, Duke Phonnis.

Commanding a crew of pickpockets, bounty hunters, poisoners, and assassins, Ilanna schemes to disgrace the Duke. She must survive blackmail, a bloodthirsty rival syndicate, and enemies within her own House to claim her spoils: vengeance for the deaths of her friends and gold to buy independence.

But all Ilanna's skill may not suffice to protect the one person who matters most: her son.

                          MY REVIEW

WELCOME BACK TO THE GUILD .  This is the second book in the series and Ilanna has grown up and has become one of the best thief's in the guild . She is cunning and has a vision of buying her freedom from the guild . There are many obstacles standing in her way from blackmail and a rival syndicate . Will she survive the onslaught to get out to the only thing that matters in her life her son,
I love  all the characters in this book but Ilanna is my favourite girl . She is kick ass and takes no prisoners . She has been through a lot but it seems the more she gets knocked down the more she gets up and fights back. She goes through a lot in this installment .  She has taken all that the guild has thrown at her. She has honed her skills and plans on using them to save herself and get out of the guild . To the only person that she loves , her son , the only person that matters to her.   She is five years older and tougher then nails . I so love her attitude and her guts . She will do anything to survive and be free .
I can't tell you about all the characters in this book cause I will be writing forever . But the guild members that can call Ilanna a friend are all there to watch her back and help her out in the heist that she is planning to pay for her way out . The characters that you think are bad turn out to be on the Ilanna's side and the ones closest to her are the ones that can not be trusted . I will say you will fall for these characters , they are very complex and deep . You will also want to slap a couple of them upside the head a few times .
While I was reading this book , which I couldn't put down , I could see the book in my mind . Playing like a movie . Which to me is a sign of a very well written story . It takes you on a roller coaster ride . You will be on the edge of your seat most of the time . You will cheer for Ilanna and her group of thieves . You will have a couple of chuckles along the way . Trust me your heart will melt when you read her story with her son . I was an emotional wreck when I was reading parts of this story . This isn't your run of the mill book where there is a happy ever after in the end . You will have your heart broken into a million pieces .  The ending will destroy you trust me on this , I really just wanted to yell at the author for what he did . If you like fantasy this is the book for you . If you like dark fantasy this is the book for you. It is going to be one of the books I read over and over . This isn't a stand alone , you have to read the first book to keep everything straight .  So if you want a great dark series that will keep you up all night long turning the pages . This is the series for you . A definite must read for your summer reading list .

GOOD MONDAY ALL

Good Monday all , hope you are all reading something good and staying cool . Today we are going to review a great book , and I must say I love this author . I am in the process of reading all that she has to read . Today's book is TWO NIGHTS by my new favourite author Kathy Reichs .

                         BOOK BLURB

A standalone thriller featuring a “tough-talking, scarred heroine”* from the author of the Temperance Brennan series, the basis for the hit TV show Bones.

Meet Sunday Night, a woman with physical and psychological scars, and a killer instinct. . . .

Sunnie has spent years running from her past, burying secrets and building a life in which she needs no one and feels nothing. But a girl has gone missing, lost in the chaos of a bomb explosion, and the family needs Sunnie’s help. Is the girl dead? Did someone take her? If she is out there, why doesn’t she want to be found?

It’s time for Sunnie to face her own demons—because they just might lead her to the truth about what really happened all those years ago.

                      MY REVIEW

This book blew me away , I have heard about here other series and I was excited to sit down and read this book.  I started reading and couldn't put it down , the author sucked me into the story after the third page.  Let me introduce you to Sunday Night is a woman who is battling her own demons and is in semi retirement on Goat island . Where she is living as a recluse , trying to rebuild her life. Until the day a young girl goes missing and she is called back into action with her brother Gus . They are on the way to finding the girl and on the way she battles her own demons and by battling those long lost demons she may be on the road to finding the girl and putting her past behind her . Will she survive and will she find the girl alive .
What I love about this author's characters is that they are flawed but they are also redeemable . Case in point Sunday has some very bad demons that she is trying to bury and keep buried . She is trying so hard but you can see her struggling and you want her to get through it all and come out the other side . As she starts to go through her demons when she is out trying to find the girl . You see a side of her that can be kind of scary at times . She is like a ticking time bomb , but she does rein it in and get control. By the end of the book you see a much calmer and happier Sunday . The grandmother of the missing girl is rich and very manipulative and I was like wow grandma is kind of bad ass, in the way she twists everyone . The characters are all very well written and very complex, there is no real black and white its all shades of grey with these characters. But when the bad guys do show up you know they are bad and boy can the author write some bad characters as well as the good guys .
The author is a definite go to for books that will make you think as you read them . The twists and turns are unbelievable . One min you are thinking no you can't go there and bam she does . One min you are thinking it is one person and then you get taken down another direction. This is a fast paced story with lots of action that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time . The new cast of characters are great and you will cheer for them and maybe shed a tear or two . She is one of the best in her genre of writing . Her books are suspenseful and fast paced , clever and well written mysteries . So if you want a book that will take you on a roller coaster ride that you will keep you on your toes and reading well into the night . This is the book for you and definite addition to your summer reading list

Gideon's Credo
A sequel to Gideon’s Passage
“Where injustice persists … Vengeance will follow”
Visualize sixteenth century France, a period that symbolized the very peak of the glorious European Renaissance; a period in which Architecture and Universities of Learning thrived that germinated the arrival of the ‘Free Thinkers’ who dared to think outside the square.
Temporarily relieved from the dangers of its Ottoman enemies from “without”, France turned its attention on its citizens “within”. What followed was religious intolerance. Religious zealots had the entrenched belief that it was their divine right to ruthlessly rid France of all opposition to Papal authority; that trailed bloodshed and misery in its wake for almost half a century. The Huguenot reformists were their “choice” of persecution.

This then is the canvas on which the story is painted. A narrative of war, of courage, and honour, of the deceit and brutality of humans, the raw passions and emotions of those who were caught in its midst … and one man’s desperate pursuit for justice for the innocent citizens of his beloved France that were being persecuted … and the price he paid for it!
His name was Gideon!

                       MY REVIEW

This is the sequel to Gideon's Passage, and I was so excited when I started reading . I loved Gideon's passage and I fell in love with the second book . This one is more of the injustice that was sweeping France at the time . Let me take you into the world of Gideon and his men. After returning from their wars they are very happy to be home . But all is not right in France , there is a war on religion going on.  A religious zealot is waging war and taking out all those who will not follow Papal authority. Will Gideon and his band of men help bring down the zealots and survive to see another day
Gideon is such a great character to read . He has a strong moral compass and is willing to help the downtrodden in a time of need . You can't help but cheer for him . He is the compass of good . On the other end of the scale there is there are some really creepy evil gentleman that will do everything in their power to keep the papal power in play, These characters are written so well and are so very complex . You really can't help but cheering for them and crying when you see one pass .  Yes I will admit I am very invested in Gideon . he is like my go to guy when I want to read a good story built on history.
The author takes us on a very emotional journey in this book . I read this book in an evening and I laughed and cried , boy did I cry. There is a part of the book I had to put down and walk away from for a bit because I was so heartbroken at what the author was putting Gideon and the guys through. This is a much more intense book then book one . We get to see Gideon in his home country where his wife is . We get to see him fight for what is right and good . The story flows of the  page, its like a movie playing in your head as you read . These are the types of books I love to read , its like they read themselves .  This isn't a stand alone  I suggest you read Gideon's Passage before you read Gideon's Credo . Just to get yourself immersed in the writing and most of all to meet Gideon and get to know him . Have tissues on hand and be prepared to shed some tears . These books will make you think, laugh and cry . So if you want a great summer read check out GIDEON'S CREDO .

Good Monday all, hope you are all staying dry or staying cool depending on where you are living . Today we are going to review BERNIE AND THE WIZARDS  ( The Universe Builders book 3 ) by Steve LeBel.

                         BOOK BLURB

For God School's latest graduate, the adventure continues...

Bernie is a young god who fixes broken universes for a living. Unfortunately, the universe he's working on is in the middle of a civil war caused by Ashok, a murderous wizard determined to control the lucrative pepper trade.

Bernie's boss urges him to solve the problem by destroying the evil Ashok and his people, but Bernie wants no part of such a massacre. Struggling to find another solution, Bernie tries to get Ashok to give up his plans for world domination. As Bernie's attempts at peaceful solutions continue to fail, his boss comes to believe the best solution is to destroy all the people and start over again.

But Bernie can't let that happen. He must destroy Ashok and his followers. Although he hates the idea of destroying life, Bernie prepares to do what is necessary, only to discover the evil wizard's powers are far more than superstitious nonsense. The young god is drawn into an epic battle pitting the power of the gods against the forces of magic, while the lives of every man, woman, and child on the planet hang in the balance.

****************
All books in The Universe Builders are standalone and can be read in any order. The first book, Bernie and the Putty, won 16 national and international awards for excellence.

                           MY REVIEW

This is the third book in the universe builders series . Welcome to the new adventure with Bernie and the gang . In this installment Bernie is charged in finding out what is happening on this planet . On this planet he is working on they are in the middle of a civil war and he has to figure out why this is happening before the whole planet is blinked away . Will he be able to help out the planet and figure out his life  before everything blows up .
I love Bernie , he is such a sweet and loving character . He is such a good guy with a heart of gold . He is still naïve in all things girl related but he can fix a planet . He goes through such changes in this book . He has to handle pressure of deadlines and the growing pressure of the fame he has about seeing an elder . He wears the pressure well though . He grows up a lot in this book . He is my all time favourite god . Lenny is back and is just as cool as he was before . He seems to become an even bigger help to Bernie and his sounding board. He is somewhat the comic relief sometimes for Bernie .   Suzie is back as well and she is more then his friend . She knows she wants to be Bernie's girlfriend but like Bernie she is a little shy about it all . You see her get jealous when other girls put designs on Bernie because of his fame .  There are some other characters that make an appearance some good and some bad . But as the story comes along you find them all kind of lovable in their own way .
Bernie and the gang is such a fun read . I read this story in an afternoon and loved every moment of it . The author takes us on such a fun ride but there is also a few lessons that we can learn. Like how to handle the fame and also sticking to your guns and doing what you feel is right . This is meant as a young adult book but I honestly believe that anyone would love to read this book . It isn't written down for young kids . It is written in a way that anyone would love it . These are such fun books to read, you never know where Bernie and the gang land up . I can't wait to see where the author takes Bernie in his next book  . So if you want a good book for your kids summer reading list or even for your summer reading list . Check out Bernie and the gang . You will not be disappointed in the least .
was given this book by the publishing house for my honest review

#AlwaysProtectYourQueen
**Readers' Favorite Five Star Review Recipient**

Ever since the outbreak of the Plague, life hasn’t been easy, and for seventeen-year-old Alice Carroll, it just got worse. Her sister, Dinah, has contracted the ‘un-deadly’ Momerath Virus and without a cure, will soon be worse than dead. She’ll be momerath.

Alice must leave the safety of the Sector and venture into Momerath Territory to find the antidote - if it exists. Chasing a rumor about a mysterious doctor with the cure, Alice falls down the rabbit hole into Wanderland, where ravenous momerath aren’t the only danger lurking.

                        MY REVIEW

I was intrigued when I read the blurb for this book. Basing the story of Alice in Wonderland and turn it into a zombie book . Now I have read many a retelling of Alice but this one took me to a totally different mind set . Imagine having all the characters that are in Alice in the apocalypse . So let me introduce you to Alice and the gang .
Ever since the plague has spread life has been hard for Alice and her sister Dinah . When her sister gets sick she has to venture out of their safe haven to look for a cure . But will she survive to get back to save her sister .
The characters are classic Alice with a twist . The author takes us to a place where you can't trust anyone and everyone is hiding something .  Alice kind of annoyed me at the beginning because she was so naïve and trusting in everything . As you get into the story we see her grow into a confident ass kicking machine . She grows up so much in the book . Chess is my favourite character , he is the Cheshire cat in human form . He is flighty and always talking in riddles , aggravating Alice . Yes I know you are wondering is the Queen in this story , yes she is not really nice . Dr Abbott reminds me of the wizard and does such a good job. The rest of the cast is there also helping or hindering Alice in her travels .
I really enjoyed this book and the concept of the apocalypse . I read this book in a weekend ,The author takes us on a journey that will have you sitting on the edge of your  seat. The characters were well written and complex and you will fall in love with Alice and Chess. But I felt like in a few spots it dragged just a bit but once the story gets going there is no stopping them . I really got into the story at chapter 3 and then couldn't put the book down . I can't wait to see where the author takes these characters . So if you want a different retelling of Alice and you like zombies and the apocalypse . This will be the story for you . Put it on your summer reading list
I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review .
